Anthropic has announced that access to its consumer product, Claude, will be limited to users aged 18 and older. Users must confirm they are 18 or older during account setup, and the company stated that age verification will be required to continue use if signals are detected suggesting the user may be a minor.
Users will be provided with the option to use Yoti, a third-party age verification platform, for this process. Yoti's verification methods include three types: age estimation via a selfie, verification using government-issued IDs such as passports or driver's licenses, and attribute sharing through the Yoti digital ID app. Accounts will be restored once the verification process is completed.
Yoti is a provider that has undergone independent SOC2 compliance audits, and the company stated that selfies, ID images, and personal data used for verification are deleted promptly after the check. Anthropic stated that it only receives the result of the verification (pass or fail) and does not receive or retain personal data such as identity documents or images.
