Meta VR Glasses Achieve 100-Gram Weight via Modular Computing Puck and Optical Tether
PLUS ULTRA by Amenoyomi
This weight reduction is made possible by separating the headset from a 300-gram computing puck. While the glasses exclusively handle the sensors and the display, the puck houses the Snapdragon Reality Elite processor, the battery, and internal storage.
To maintain the high bandwidth required for 5K resolution at 120Hz, the glasses and puck are linked by an optical tether. This cable connection is used to ensure low latency and the transmission of high-quality visuals, serving as a critical factor in keeping the headset lightweight compared to wireless alternatives.
The computing puck provides 12GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, with additional support for microSD expansion. It also supports 45W fast charging, providing up to three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback.
The 5K Infinite Display consists of micro-OLED panels with a resolution of 2,412 by 2,288 pixels per eye and 37 pixels per degree. While the modular design enables this clarity, the field of view is narrowed to 70 degrees horizontally and 66 degrees vertically.
The device will include Meta AI integration and support for virtual workspaces, priced at $1,299.99. It is scheduled for release in the spring of 2027.
