Twenty-five Fields medalists have signed a letter titled "A Severe Misalignment of AI in Mathematics," warning that the current trajectory of AI development poses a threat to the scientific integrity of mathematics.

The signatories argue that the goals of AI companies are misaligned with the primary objective of mathematics: achieving conceptual understanding and insight. They note that AI-generated solutions are often released in a rush, leaving insufficient time for proper documentation, the isolation of new methods, or the necessary citation of previous works. This rapid output, while capable of solving major mathematical problems, risks transforming mathematics into a mere production of "true/false" statements, potentially destroying the fertile ground required for genuine intellectual discovery.

The declaration emphasizes that while AI has the potential to accelerate mathematical study, the focus must remain on human-led processes of discussion, simplification, and the nurturing of students and ideas. The authors call for urgent attention from both AI developers and society to ensure that AI serves to enhance, rather than undermine, the fundamental purposes of intellectual work.
