Jun Kim joins Hugging Face to support MLX and oMLX ecosystem
MLX is a framework developed by Apple specifically optimized for Apple Silicon to enable local AI execution. Jun Kim will lead the ongoing development of oMLX, an open-source project under the Apache 2.0 license, as it transitions from a side project to a fully maintained and funded initiative.
One of the primary focus areas for Kim and Hugging Face is streamlining the transition from transformer model definitions to reference MLX implementations. The goal is to ensure that new models from the transformers library can be easily consumed by various MLX engines.
This move aims to strengthen the relationship between Hugging Face and existing ecosystem contributors, such as mlx-lm, mlx-vlm, and LMStudio, to provide better tools and building blocks for running local AI.
