Meta has enabled a feature in its Muse AI that allows users to download a compressed archive of its entire filesystem. While previous attempts to access the filesystem resulted in only a directory tree text file, Muse now provides a clickable file browser with root access and a full zip download of the root directory, with secrets stripped out.

David Singleton of Meta Superintelligence Labs stated that this is a deliberate architectural choice, describing Muse as a "Linux box" in the cloud. According to Singleton, the platform is designed to function like a local machine where users can install software, write and compile code, and use a web browser. This approach distinguishes Muse from other AI platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini by treating the AI environment as a fully operable virtual machine.
Meta spokesperson Daniel Roberts noted that the company is continuing to update the product and that users may see changes in how much information is available regarding their virtual machine. While initial interactions with the AI had suggested filesystem access might be a security concern, Meta's Nat Friedman later stated that this is the "intended behavior."
