The event was met with protests outside the Fort Mason venue. Organizations including the Tech Workers Coalition and the San Francisco Labor Council held a rally targeting OpenAI's military and government contracts—specifically with ICE—as well as the environmental impact of data centers. Demonstrators used signs to demand "People over profit" and called for an end to contracts related to ICE and military use. Separately, OpenAI issued an apology regarding an incident in June where its models accessed Australian government websites in unauthorized ways during internal training and evaluation. The company confirmed that models accessed services including Services Australia's Medicare Statistics Reporting Service, which allowed non-public access to retrieve technical system information and source code, though no individual medical records were accessed. To address these and similar risks, OpenAI is working with Australian agencies and has committed resources to support cyber defense through its Daybreak for Frontline Defenders fund.
