Open-source tool enables AI agents to design LEGO models using LDraw

A developer has released ldraw-nova, an open-source tool designed to enable AI agents to create 3D LEGO models through the LDraw assembly language. LDraw is an open standard for LEGO CAD programs that allows users to create virtual models and scenes.

The tool addresses the difficulty AI agents face with geometry-related mathematics, such as part rotations and positioning. By providing a Python-based set of primitives, verbs, and constructive vocabulary, ldraw-nova allows agents to learn by example and act more like a compiler. The process involves an agent producing a plan.json file, which is then interpreted by generator.py to create an .mpd model file.

The project developer noted that while initial tests with various LLMs showed potential, getting the models correct required specific tooling. The current release leverages tools like jev-rerank, a semantic search and re-ranking tool. The application can be run as a web app using Docker.
