The first version of Elon Musk's AI-generated encyclopedia, Grokipedia, has been released. Musk stated, "The goal is an open-source, comprehensive compendium of knowledge. 1.0 will be 10x better, and even 0.1 is better than Wikipedia."
However, a verification by PCMag confirmed numerous instances where articles, such as those for the Nintendo Switch and MacBook Pro, almost directly appropriated content from Wikipedia pages. A disclaimer at the bottom of each page reads, "Adapted from Wikipedia, under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 License."
While Grokipedia's English articles, which are said to be AI-generated, number 885,279, Wikipedia possesses 7 million articles across more than 340 languages. The number of citations is also lower on Grokipedia; for the Nintendo Switch article, Grokipedia had 316 citations compared to Wikipedia's 522, and for the MacBook Pro, Grokipedia had only 2.
