Anthropic is reportedly prepared to fight a copyright infringement lawsuit alleging that it downloaded pirated books and used them for training purposes.
While a federal district court ruling has recognized copyright infringement regarding the use of pirated books for training, there was a prior case where fair use was recognized for the act of legally purchasing and scanning books, which subsequently led to a settlement. In the current lawsuit, similar claims may be made regarding works other than books, but Anthropic is said to be maintaining a firm stance.
