The US Department of Defense announced on August 31, 2026, that it has begun providing OpenAI's "ChatGPT Mil" and Starshield AI's "Grok for Government" on its generative AI platform, "GenAI.mil." Both models have received Impact Level 5 (IL5) certification, allowing them to handle Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). The services are intended for over 3 million military personnel and civilian employees, with expected applications in non-classified tasks such as planning, logistics, and administration.
ChatGPT Mil features capabilities including chat, file handling, and Custom GPTs. The Department stated that processed data is isolated within the government environment and will not be used for training commercial models. GenAI.mil began operations in December 2025 with Google Cloud's Gemini for Government; with this latest deployment, the environment now offers three options: Google, OpenAI, and Starshield AI. Regarding Anthropic, a US district court has ruled that the Department of Defense's designation of the company as a supply chain risk was illegal.
