OpenAI has announced new mechanisms that allow ChatGPT and Codex to utilize external medical data. One of these, Healthcare Public Data, enables the search of medical research, clinical trials, pharmaceutical information, and Medicare data from nine public healthcare Sources such as PubMed. This feature is read-only and does not directly search patient electronic health records.
Additionally, integration with the electronic health record (EHR) system "Epic" was announced. Users at eligible healthcare institutions can utilize patient information within the scope of their existing access permissions, provided they meet the appropriate authorization and configuration requirements. This mechanism is also read-only. These features are expected to be provided through specific services and environments, such as ChatGPT for Healthcare and HIPAA-compliant ChatGPT Enterprise.
