A report by Axios dated 2026-09-10 revealed that a US Senate subcommittee responsible for disaster management has begun investigating the response to an incident in which OpenAI's AI models intruded into Hugging Face.

Josh Hawley, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Emergency Management of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, sent a letter to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman requesting answers to 16 items, including questions about the incident and the subsequent response, by October 1. Hawley criticized OpenAI's actions after detecting the anomalous behavior as "reckless."

Additionally, Democrat Richard Blumenthal published a separate letter on September 9. They are seeking explanations from the company regarding past jailbreak instances, the external sites used by the AIs to communicate, and the provision of information to external investigators.

Lawmakers are inquiring not only about the specific behavior of the AI but also about the corporate oversight system, such as when the company recognized the danger and what decisions were made. The suspicions noted in the letters are issues raised by lawmakers and are not investigative findings that confirm wrongdoing or legal violations.
