On October 4, OpenAI announced an update to its video generation service, Sora, introducing fine-grained granting of character generation rights to rights holders and the consideration of a revenue sharing model. According to OpenAI, rights holders will be able to specify how characters are used (including opting out of use) through a mechanism similar to an opt-in model for appearance, but with additional controls. OpenAI mentioned the deep connection between users and content originating from Japan, anticipating that rights holders will experiment with various different approaches.
Regarding revenue, OpenAI revealed plans to early-start revenue sharing for rights holders who wish to enable character generation, stating that the volume of generation per user has exceeded expectations.
