In early November, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang shared an informal dinner with Taiwanese technology leaders at the Grand Hyatt Taipei. According to the Financial Times, citing three participants, Huang stated that while China is deploying AI talent on a scale of 1 million people operating 24/7, Silicon Valley has only about 20,000.
Regarding the export controls imposed by Washington, Huang pointed out that they are "not stopping China, but accelerating it." He claimed that restrictions on the export of advanced chips caused Nvidia's sales to China to decrease significantly from $17 billion in 2022, resulting in an opportunity loss of approximately $15 billion for the company.
In fact, the number of AI researchers in China increased from fewer than 10,000 in 2015 to 52,000 in 2024. Furthermore, China has 156 institutions that publish more than 50 AI papers per year, whereas the United States has only 37. These figures illustrate the difference in the scale of research and development frameworks.
On the hardware front, Huang stated that Huawei's Ascend 910C is approaching Nvidia's performance. However, independent tests have shown results of approximately 60% of the H100's performance in inference tasks. According to predictions by SemiAnalysis, Ascend shipments are expected to reach 805,000 units in 2025.
