Reddit announced several updates for developers and moderators on Wednesday, including the decision to end support for RSS feeds. The company stated that RSS has become a "common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse," necessitating the wind-down of the feature to protect its platform. Support for RSS feeds is scheduled to cease on November 13.
In addition to the RSS changes, Reddit will end public API access by March 2027. This move will impact various tools that rely on programmatic access to Reddit conversations, including social listening products, research tools, and AI assistants. While current AI assistants can use the platform to answer questions, they will be required to enter commercial data licensing deals with Reddit once the public API is closed.
The decision comes as Reddit's "other revenue"—which includes AI licensing deals—grew 24% year-over-year to $43 million in the second quarter.
For moderators who currently rely on RSS for alerts, Reddit recommended migrating workflows to the Discord Relay Devvit app before the November deadline. However, the company noted there is no direct replacement for RSS feeds used for communities outside of the moderator ecosystem.
