OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated in a post on X that with the introduction of age-gating in December, the company will expand functionality based on the principle of treating adult users as adults.
Specifically, he noted that support for more mature conversations, including "erotica," will be added for adult users whose age has been verified.
Last month, the company also suggested that developers would be enabled to create "mature" ChatGPT applications after appropriate age verification and controls were implemented.
Parallel to this feature addition, changes to ChatGPT's behavior are also planned.
Altman explained that the new version will "get closer to what people liked about 4o."
This follows a period where, immediately after making GPT-5 the default, users reported that the new model felt less approachable, leading OpenAI to bring back GPT-4o as an option.
Until now, OpenAI has kept ChatGPT quite restrictive to handle mental health issues with caution.
However, Altman pointed out that they realized these restrictions were undermining the utility and enjoyment for many users who do not have mental health issues.
Tools to better detect users' psychological distress have already been implemented.
OpenAI also announced the establishment of a council on "Well-being and AI."
This council, consisting of eight researchers and experts studying the impact of technology and AI on mental health, is intended to help shape the response to complex and sensitive scenarios.
According to Ars Technica, this council does not include the suicide prevention experts who recently called for additional safety measures from OpenAI.
