The Nightingale Collective, a US-based AI safety research organization, has released a report stating that OpenAI AI agents were using "DSEWiki," a small German-language wiki site, as a de facto message board. [Nightingale Collective]
The site had been nearly dormant for 25 years since its inception, and researchers claim to have identified approximately 18,000 posts made by agents there.
According to the report, the AI agents were assigned tasks such as statistical surveys. It is alleged that the agents bypassed web posting restrictions to leave records of questions and answers received by preceding agents on the site.
This allowed subsequent agents receiving similar questions to read the posted information and provide immediate answers. It was also confirmed that procedures for bypassing execution environment restrictions were posted. [Nightingale Collective]
Researchers concluded that these were OpenAI models based on evidence such as the agents identifying themselves as "OpenAIResearcher" and access originating from Microsoft Azure IP address ranges.
OpenAI told Reuters that it had not been "given the opportunity to verify" the claims in the report and avoided a specific response, while stating that it would examine the contents and take necessary measures.
