Reports indicate that the smart glasses Amazon is introducing for its delivery drivers feature a mechanism to repeatedly capture images of the surroundings during delivery operations, with the data being utilized for generative AI mapping.

The collected images are used in a system called "Wellspring." This system aims to streamline delivery routes and reduce misdeliveries by combining multiple Sources. Amazon has explained that the purpose of using the images is to improve delivery efficiency, not for surveillance.

On the other hand, privacy concerns have been raised regarding the fact that images are captured on private property, such as residential backyards. While Amazon states that it applies blurring to people and vehicle license plates before they are reviewed by human operators, it is reported that customers currently have no means to request the review or deletion of captured images. Furthermore, the company has not disclosed the retention period for the images.

For the delivery drivers, a "privacy mode" is provided to stop recording during breaks or when entering specific facilities. Additionally, Amazon is considering a mechanism to automatically stop recording based on location information. Amazon aims to have more than 20,000 drivers using the device by the end of 2027.
