Google Cloud Releases Spanner Omni, a Deploy-Anywhere Multi-Model Database

Google Cloud has announced the general availability of Spanner Omni, a multi-model database software that allows users to deploy Spanner's capabilities outside of the Google Cloud environment. Spanner Omni supports relational, graph, key-value, vector, and text search models, making it suitable for various workloads including agentic AI.

The software is designed to run on Linux (RHEL 9, Ubuntu 22) and macOS (M1, M2, M3), and is compatible with virtual machines or Kubernetes Pods on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and other infrastructures. While the managed Spanner service relies on Google Cloud-specific components like Colossus and TrueTime, Spanner Omni replaces these with software-based implementations to achieve comparable performance in private or multi-cloud environments.

Spanner Omni includes support for Model Context Protocol (MCP), allowing autonomous agents to use the database as an operational memory layer. For development and testing, a "Developer Edition" is available, which allows full functionality for up to 90 days on a single server with four or fewer vCPUs. For production workloads, a "Commercial Edition" is offered via a vCPU-based annual subscription.

Unlike the fully managed Spanner service, users are responsible for all day-to-day operations, including maintenance, upgrades, and infrastructure monitoring. Google also does not provide availability SLAs for this self-managed version.
