OpenAI announces Dots AI agents to challenge Meta's Muse

At its annual DevDay conference, OpenAI announced Dots, a new AI agent platform described by CEO Sam Altman as a "real-deal AI" designed to handle ambitious, long-horizon tasks. Powered by the GPT-6 Astra model, Dots is positioned as more than a simple assistant, functioning instead as a "chief of staff" or experienced engineer capable of managing complex work such as website design, team planning, and professional analysis.

Unlike Meta’s Muse agent platform, which offers free access through a dedicated virtual machine, Dots is currently limited to users on OpenAI's $20/month Pro plan and higher. This pricing model reflects the high computational costs associated with the agent's advanced capabilities. OpenAI executives noted that while Dots starts as a premium product, the company aims to develop mass-market solutions for billions of users in the future.

Dots distinguishes itself from existing consumer tools by focusing on complex knowledge work and long-term consistency. OpenAI is also working with Microsoft to integrate specialized Dots—trained for areas like legal and accounting analysis—into its Agent 365 platform. To address privacy concerns, the company introduced "OpenAI Private Intelligence," a framework designed to provide businesses with stronger data controls and options for zero data retention.
