Elon Musk has referred to Wikipedia as "Wokepedia" and claims that Grokipedia is an unbiased knowledge base. However, an investigation of the first edition by the PCMag editorial team found that countless pages were copied almost word-for-word from Wikipedia.

At the bottom of each Grokipedia page, a disclaimer states, "Content adapted from Wikipedia is provided under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license." The duplicated pages found span a wide range of topics, not limited to political subjects, including the Nintendo Switch and MacBook Pro.

While Grokipedia is smaller in scale with 885,279 English articles compared to Wikipedia's 7 million (across more than 340 languages), Musk has emphasized that it is AI-generated. However, the number of citations tends to be lower than those on Wikipedia. For example, the Nintendo Switch article had 316 citations on Grokipedia compared to 522 on Wikipedia. For the MacBook Pro, the gap was even wider, with 2 citations versus 142.

Differences in descriptions were observed on some pages, including political topics. Grokipedia describes the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol as a "riot that occurred amid claims of voter fraud," whereas Wikipedia describes it as an "attempted coup following the loss of the 2020 presidential election." In the introduction for George Floyd, Grokipedia describes him as an "American man with a long criminal record," while Wikipedia describes him as a "man killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis." It has been reported that these specific pages did not contain the Wikipedia-derived disclaimer.

Wikimedia, the non-profit organization that operates Wikipedia, stated that it is investigating to understand how Grokipedia works. The organization emphasized that "knowledge is, and will always be, human," adding that "Wikipedia's human-curated knowledge is being relied upon by AI companies, and even Grokipedia could not exist without Wikipedia."
